Stellenbosch - Place of Gables, Oaks and Wine
No matter where you may have come from, you will find that Stellenbosch is unlike any other place on earth. An approximate 45 minute drive from Camps Bay or Cape Town, Stellenbosch is a University town situated in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region.
Stellenbosch has moved with the times without sacrificing too much of its substance or any of its soul. Old oak trees against white walls of Cape Dutch buildings transform streets into romantic soft, shady avenues. But most of all, Stellenbosch is known for its good wines and attracts wine-lovers and tourists from around the world.
"Stellenbosch has the oldest Wine Route in the country and is often referred to as the quality wine-growing region of South Africa".
Franshoek - Valley of the Hugenots. The gourmet capital of South Africa!
In 1688, 150 French Hugenots arrived and settled in this region. The area was then re-named Franschhoek (translates to French corner). Nestled in the Drakenstein mountains, Franschhoek is one of the most picturesque towns you will ever visit.
Eight of the Top 100 restaurants in South Africa are situated in Franschhoek. This is makes the region an ideal lunch stop. Indulge your palate with internationally acclaimed cuisine by selecting from the many restaurants that Franschhoek has.
A number of wineries offer a visit inside their winery and explain the wine making process. This is particularly exciting during our harvest period February and March when there is plenty of activity in the region.
You are never made to feel obliged to purchase wines as they understand that many guests have further onward travel and simply can’t carry bottles of wine. The majority of wineries now have agents in countries around the world and the winery will happily provide you with their contact details so that you can purchase if you wish on returning home.
20% of our Vineyards are Chenin Blanc, of which large proportion of the wine is distilled to make our well known brandy. There are a few wineries which have one or two pot-stilled brandies as part of their range (similar to Cognac) and it can make an exciting change to try some of our quality brands.
Why not consider a visit to an Olive grove and try some olives and olive oil. For the real enthusiasts it is possible to see how Olive oil is made and learn what ‘Extra Virgin’ actually means? South Africa is now well known for our local cheeses and some of the wineries offer a cheese tasting along with wine
